I Kept My Inheritance a Secret From My Husband — He Says He’ll Never Forgive Me

My husband, Roy, and I have been happily married for 16 years. We are parents to 2 teenage daughters and both hold full-time jobs, allowing us to get by every day.

Last year, my husband’s mother, Camille, who is 78, was diagnosed with a hip issue that left her wheelchair-bound. The pain she endures can be alleviated through surgery, and doctors say that she might even walk again. Unfortunately, the cost of the procedure is beyond our means.

Recently, my uncle died and left me a sum of $14,000.

As a mother, my first consideration was my children. I’ve always been worried about how we would fund their college education, and the inheritance money seemed like the answer to my worries.

However, I’m aware that my husband’s immediate priority would be to use the money for his mother’s surgery. So I didn’t tell him as I plan on saving it for our kids’ future.

He accidentally found out yesterday and became furious. He said, “My mom is ill, and you choose to leave her in so much pain when we could save her?” He says that he could never forgive me.

While I empathize with my mother-in-law’s situation, I believe that my children have their entire future ahead of them. I explained to my husband that I will always put my kids first, and he should also be doing the same.

Were my actions wrong? What is your perspective on this situation?
