My Husband Proposed With His Ex-Fiancée’s Ring

Ten years ago, my husband “Jack” (35M) proposed to me (33F) with a stunning ring that he claimed was a family heirloom. I was over the moon, and of course, I said yes.

Yesterday, during a family dinner, I learned the truth about the ring’s origin. My mother-in-law casually mentioned, “Oh, that’s the ring Jack’s ex-girlfriend threw at him when they broke up!” I almost choked on my drink. His ex, “Emma,” chose the design, and it was tailor-made for her. They were together for just a year!

After dinner, when I confronted him and yelled, “How could you propose with Emma’s ring? It wasn’t even a family heirloom!” He got defensive and insisted that he wanted to “reclaim” the ring and make it about our love story.

Jack: “Look, she never appreciated the ring or the effort I put into it. I wanted to give it a new, meaningful story with you.”

Me: “But it was made for her! It’s tainted with their history!”

Jack: “I’m sorry if it upsets you, but it’s just a ring. Our love is what matters.”

I’m torn between feeling betrayed and appreciating the thought behind his proposal. I don’t want to be reminded of his ex every time I look at my engagement ring, but he insists it’s no big deal. Am I the overreacting for being hurt and angry about this situation?
