A TikTok video has gone viral, showcasing a man’s innovative and perhaps controversial approach to cost-cutting during grocery shopping. Embodying the philosophy of “working smarter, not harder,” the video captured by his partner shows his unconventional method.

Mai, the partner of a shopper named Mason, recently shared a video on social media of Mason unwrapping bananas before weighing them at the self-service checkout to ensure a lower cost.
“The secondhand embarrassment though,” Mai wrote in the caption, which reveals she doesn’t quite agree with her partner’s method.
People in the comments had mixed reactions to Mason’s way of saving money. While one viewer supported him, going even further to say “real frugal people weigh them without a bag”, someone else implied the amount saved wasn’t worth the trouble. “All that to save 25¢,” they said.
We can only imagine how those fruits would end up on the drive home from the supermarket. While the skin isn’t super strong, it does provide some protection for each banana. So, whether this trick is worth the risks involved is up for debate.
